Surrounded by Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore land, this 1925-established state park offers three miles of shoreline, one-half mile of which is ready for swimming with lifeguards on staff. Dunes rise as high as 192 feet (Mount Tom). Crowded in summer; be ready on weekends to wait in lines of cars unless you arrive before 9 or 10 am. Picnic area with tables, grills and shelters. Campgrounds are closed this season. On a clear day, you can see Chicago. No pets by swimming areas. Open daily 7 am-11 pm; swimming allowed 11 am-7 pm. Take I-94 Exit 26B to Ind. 49 North.
